In 1983 Soil Resource Development Institute was established under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forest by reorganizing the then Department of Soil Survey. From 1986 onwards through successful completion of various projects the activities of the institute increased manifold. It is now prepared to face the challenge of future to make a breakthrough in crop production through improved soil management in Bangladesh, though SRDI still has an imbalance organogram.

Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) is a specialized national agricultural research Institute and has got the mandate to use nuclear tools in agricultural research. By the peaceful use of these tools scientists of the Institute have been doing research in various agricultural disciplines with major emphasis on varietal improvement of crops, management of soils and fertilizers, development of appropriate techniques to improve quality and quantity of crops, development of methods for controlling diseases and insect pests and management of water.

BARI (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute) is the largest multi-crop research institute conducting research on a large number of crops, such as cereals, tubers, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, spices, flowers, etc. Besides variety development, this institute also carries out research on non-commodity areas, such as soil and crop management, disease and insect management, irrigation and water management, development of farm machinery, improvement of cropping and farming system management, post-harvest handling and processing, and socio-economics studies related to production, marketing, and consumption.

Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) is one of the oldest research institutes of Bangladesh conducting research on sugarcane – the raw material sugar, gur and cane juice. Sugarcane is the only dependable cash crop in the low rainfall belt of the north-west and south-west parts of Bangladesh. Based on sugarcane, the sugar and gur industries of Bangladesh have developed in the country.

The Barind area of relatively high and dry land between the two mighty rivers, Jamuna and Padma, is spread over the district’s of greater Rajshahi, Bogra, Rangpur and Dinajpur. After liberation, development programme was taken for whole of the country except Barind Tract. Extension of irrigation facility is the prior condition for agricultural development. The deep tube well installation project was implemented all over Bangladesh except Barind tract by BADC with the consultation of foreign sepecialist. In 1985 Bangladesh Government decided to implement a project named “ Barind Integrated Area Development Project(BIADP)’’ by BADC for agricultural development of the area. Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA), was constituted by the Ministry of Agriculture.
